HANOI - The world No. 1 pool player, Singaporean Aloysius Yapp, endured a calamitous 10-ball singles semi-final match against the Philippines' Johann Chua on Friday (May 20), losing 9-2 to settle for the bronze.

Yapp, 25, scratched the cue ball on three consecutive breaks - an occurrence almost unheard of and one which drew chuckles and gasps of disbelief from spectators at the Ha Dong Gymnasium - and trailed 6-0.

Bizarrely Chua, who had won gold in the 9-ball event on Wednesday, then scratched on three consecutive breaks himself, allowing Yapp to capitalise and get wins on the board.

But the lead the Filipino world No. 84 had built proved too much for Yapp to overhaul in the end.

On Tuesday, Yapp lost the 9-ball singles semi-final to familiar foe Carlo Biado to also settle for bronze.

World No. 29 Biado, the 2017 world 9-ball champion, had also beaten him in the final of the prestigious US Open last September, and went on to win the silver medal in the 9-ball in Hanoi.

On Friday, the Filipino was the scourge of Singapore once again as he beat world No.40 Sharik Sayed 9-3 in the other semi-final to book another all-Filipino pool final.
