The 35-year-old South Korean who was pinned under a truck on Wednesday is recovering at Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The man, whose surname is Kim, was believed to have been hit by the trailer truck at 11.45am as he was crossing the road at the junction of Bendemeer Road and Boon Keng Road.

The accident led to a remarkable display of public spiritedness, when more than 30 passers-by who heard his screams rushed to his aid and lifted the trailer truck, freeing him.

Mr Kim, who was in Singapore for a business trip, escaped with a leg fracture and underwent surgery at the hospital on Wednesday night.

An associate of his said Mr Kim declined to speak to the media as he was still in shock. It is understood his parents are on their way here.

When contacted, police said that investigations were still ongoing. The 25-year-old truck driver has been arrested.

The aftermath of the accident was caught on camera by Mr Foo Suan Wang, a senior manager at healthcare company Medtronic, who was watching from the sixth floor of an office building nearby.

The 11/2-minute video showed passers-by pushing the side of the truck and pulling Mr Kim to safety. The video has received more than 500,000 views.

Singapore Kindness Movement associate general secretary Cesar Balota said: "We've always believed that Singaporeans are not as harsh or as cold as people make us out to be."

Passer-by Samsuddin Musha, 53, who helped Singapore Civil Defence Force personnel hold Mr Kim's legs still as he was being bandaged, said: "I hope that he is doing fine and not too hurt."
