BEIJING – The poorly managed lockdown in Shanghai earlier in 2022 did not dim the city’s Communist Party chief Li Qiang’s rising star, as the close aide of President Xi Jinping is now set to become the country’s next premier.

Defying pundits, Mr Li emerged as Mr Xi’s No. 2 in the Politburo Standing Committee – the pinnacle of power in China – unveiled on Sunday.
