Mexico storm Cosme upgraded to hurricane: Forecasters

MIAMI (AFP) - Tropical Storm Cosme was upgraded to a hurricane on Tuesday, as it swirled off Mexico's Pacific coast, forecasters said.

At 1500 GMT, Cosme was about 365 miles (585km) south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (120km) per hour.

The storm was moving towards the northwest at around 18 miles (30km) per hour, the National Hurricane Centre in Miami said, and was expected to pass near sparsely populated Socorro Island later on Tuesday.

Forecasters said large swells created by Cosme will be felt along Mexico's Pacific coast from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, and could cause dangerous surf and rip currents.
