Sharapova's upset of Wozniacki sends serious message

New: Gift this subscriber-only story to your friends and family

Sport is fun but apparently no one told Maria Sharapova. Fun is not in her lexicon, certainly not on court. Fun may be what Amanda Anisimova said she had as she upset No. 11 seed Aryna Sabalenka but she's 17 and carefree. Sharapova is 31 and on court is a well-coiffed grim reaper. Tennis for her is gritty, sweaty work, it's a hard-edged duel, it's unsmiling hand-to-hand combat.

It is, well, fun to watch.
