Slingers lead ABL after third win in a row

The Singapore Slingers notched up their third straight victory to start off the 2016-17 Asean Basketball League season, after thrashing the Saigon Heat 90-65 in Ho Chi Minh City yesterday.

With the win, the Slingers take top spot in the six-team league, ahead of the Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions, who have won their first two games.


Slorach, Mardan stay in the hunt in Delhi

DELHI • Singapore's Mitchell Slorach (one-over 73 yesterday) and Mardan Mamat (72) remained in the top half of the US$400,000 (S$568,000) Panasonic Open India.

The duo were both on even-par 144 at the rain-delayed Asian Tour event at the Delhi Golf Club. Indian golfer Mukesh Kumar shot a 69 yesterday and is on 136, holding a two-stroke lead heading into today's final round.


Keo to meet Tang in S'pore Open final

Malaysia's Elvinn Keo halted the fine run of his compatriot, qualifier Gurshan Singh, at the 2016 Old Chang Kee-Marigold Singapore Open at Kallang Squash Centre yesterday, when he beat the Perak-born lad in straight games 11-9, 11-8, 11-7 in 25 minutes.

In today's final, he will face Hong Kong's Tang Ming Hong, who beat Malaysia's Addeen Idrakie in 13-11, 11-7, 11-9 in the other semi-final.


Vera dominates Sekine to retain title

MANILA • American mixed martial arts fighter Brandon Vera retained his One heavyweight world championship belt on Friday night, after beating Japanese challenger Hideki Sekine by technical knockout just minutes into the first round.

In the co-main event of the evening, One bantamweight world champion Bibiano Fernandes of Brazil also retained his title, overcoming a nose injury he suffered in the third round to defeat Reece McLaren of Australia.


Sixth Athlete of the Year award for Bolt

MONACO • Sprint king Usain Bolt won an unprecedented sixth International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) male Athlete of the Year award on Friday.

He had also won in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, and was rewarded for another blistering season that saw him claim three gold medals (100m, 200m and 4x100m relay) at the Rio Olympics for the third consecutive Games.
