School Sports: RI clinch A Div badminton double, beating River Valley in both finals

SINGAPORE - Raffles Institution (RI) completed a Schools National A Division badminton double over River Valley High School (RVHS), winning both the Boys' and Girls' titles 3-0 and 4-1 respectively at the Toa Payoh Sports Hall on Thursday.

For the Raffles boys, it was a fairly straightforward win, as they claimed both the first and second games in straight sets.

River Valley's Lim Zhi Hong stretched Raffles' Zhu Bolin in the third game, beating him 21-17 in the first set, but succumbed in the next two sets, 14-21, 16-21.

The captain of RVHS's boys team, Ng Zheng Teng, said: "We were playing in our first finals, so we just came with an open heart to feel the moment. Winning was not a must, but we put up a good fight."

The school's girls' team put up a strong showing against the RI girls, with three of the five ties going to three sets .

RI's clinched the win in the fourth tie, as their doubles pair of Charis Chan and Elisabeth Yaw beat RVHS's Neo Yi Fang and Clariis Woon 15-21, 21-15, 21-18.

The double title wins did not come as a surprise to RI's doubles coach Aman Santosa, who said: "The players have been working very hard for this, and I was confident we would secure both titles. The players did well."
