SINGAPORE - A semi-final berth is out of Singapore's hands in the 18th Asean University Games after the team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Malaysia in a Group B match at the Nanyang Technological University Main Field on Monday (July 11).

The visitors scored on the stroke of half-time when midfielder Khairul Nasreen headed in from a corner. Singapore were the more dominant side before the goal but once the second half kicked off, the Malaysians controlled the tempo of the game and denied the hosts a chance to equalise.

Singapore now lie bottom of the three-team Group B with only a point - they drew 1-1 with Cambodia on Saturday. Their fate will be decided on Wednesday when Cambodia take on Malaysia - the latter must win by two goals or more to see the host nation progress into the semi-final.

In Monday's other match, Myanmar beat Laos 3-0 in Group A.
