Football: LionsXII cruise to Malaysian FA Cup quarters after thrashing Spa Putrajaya 4-0

The LionsXII produced a convincing display of attacking football to thrash Spa Putrajaya 4-0 on Saturday evening in the second round of the Malaysian FA Cup and progressed to the quarter-finals.

Fandi Ahmad's team was dominant right from the first whistle at Jalan Besar Stadium to defeat the second-tiered Malaysian Premier League side from Kuala Lumpur.

Versatile defender Madhu Mohana, who played at right-back against the visitors, rammed home an emphatic volley in the 17th minute from winger Gabriel Quak's inswinging corner.

Ten minutes later, striker Khairul Amri received Madhu's throw, turned his marker before blasting a shot from an acute angle that was deflected into the net.

The hosts continued to press forward after the break and Quak was rewarded for his incisive play in the 58th minute when he cut in from the right to unleash a shot that looped over the stranded goalkeeper Mahathir Mohammad.

Amri completed the rout six minutes from time when he half-volleyed midfielder Izzdin Shafiq's free-kick between Mahathir's legs.

The LionsXII will now meet Johor Darul Takzim II, starring Singaporean internationals Shahril Ishak and Baihakki Khaizan, in the quarter-final.
