Push for digital skills training

A national training programme by SkillsFuture Singapore, launched yesterday, will offer courses in digital skills to help Singaporeans adapt to a changing workplace. The courses, covering topics like the use of e-commerce platforms, data analytics and automation, are expected to reach 100,000 people over the next three years.

Jokowi walks to parade

President Joko Widodo, popularly known as Jokowi, did not want to let a traffic jam hold him up for a military parade to mark the 72nd anniversary of Indonesia's national armed forces. The unassuming leader got down from his limousine, stuck in traffic in Cilegon, Banten province, and walked the rest of the way to the venue.

Toxin ties women to Kim case

Traces of the deadly nerve agent VX were found on the clothing of the two women accused of murdering Mr Kim Jong Nam, half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a Malaysian court heard yesterday. This was the first piece of evidence in the murder trial that linked the two suspects to the nerve agent.

Australia to get space agency

Australia is setting up its first space agency and experts said the agency will be able to quickly pay for itself. Dr Alan Duffy, a space industry expert, said the agency could encourage Australia's involvement in the manufacturing of satellites, as well as the capture and use of satellite data.

Supermarket chain FairPrice has launched a six-month public education campaign to promote brown rice, in a bid to fight the rise of diabetes here. As part of the initiative, it is selling white and brown rice under its housebrands at the same price till Oct 18.

Catalist stocks outdo STI

The 10 largest stocks on the Catalist board have delivered a market cap-weighted average price return of 35.2 per cent so far this year, outperforming the blue-chip Straits Times Index (STI), which returned 12.4 per cent. Top of the league was UnUsUal, the concert promoter, which has seen its shares soar 170 per cent since it was spun off from mm2 Asia in April.

Thomas wins top PGA award

"It's a huge honour," said Justin Thomas after winning the Jack Nicklaus Trophy as the PGA Tour's Player of the Year. Thomas, 24, had only one PGA title at the start of the 2016-2017 season, but he has ended it as a Major champion, the FedExCup champion - while winning a Tour-leading five titles - and has now capped it off with the prestigious peer-voted accolade.

Paya Lebar gets new cineplex

Golden Village Paya Lebar, a 756-seat cineplex with eight halls, opens today. It is located on the third level of the SingPost Centre mall, next to the Paya Lebar MRT station. In a first for a local cinema, a laser projection system has been installed, which promises sharper, brighter images.
