Man who held taxi driver at knifepoint arrested

The police arrested a 40-year-old man this morning for holding a taxi driver at knifepoint and robbing him.

At about 1.45am, the suspect boarded a taxi along Marina Boulevard, and directed the driver to take him to Lim Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery. But upon reaching the destination, the suspect threatened the driver with a knife and forced him to hand over his money and mobile phone. He then instructed the driver to take him to Orchard Road, where he alighted.

The victim called the police, who located and detained the suspect along Orchard Road at about 3.30am. He was arrested and the stolen valuables recovered.

The suspect will be charged with armed robbery, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years.

The police would like to remind taxi drivers to remain vigilant and wary if passengers ask to be taken to isolated destinations. If they encounter a similar situation, they should remain calm and avoid confronting the culprit. Take note of the culprit's description and call the police immediately as soon as it is safe to do so.
