SINGAPORE - A driver was making a right turn into the entrance of Vicom Inspection Centre in Kaki Bukit when he failed to give way and caused a motorcyclist to crash into his van, causing the biker's death.

On Thursday (Feb 16), Bangladeshi installation technician Uddin Keyam, 36, was jailed for four weeks and banned from driving for five years for causing death by negligence at the non-signalised junction of Kaki Bukit Avenue 4 at about 9am on Aug 27 last year.

The motorcyclist, Mr Wong Foo Wai, 57, died three days later from extensive brain and spinal cord injuries.

The court heard that Uddin was driving the company van to Vicom along Kaki Bukit Avenue 4 to renew the vehicle's road tax. Although he slowed down along the rightmost lane intending to make a right turn into Vicom, he did not completely stop.

Mr Wong was travelling from the opposite direction towards him on the leftmost lane as Uddin was making the right turn.

In the midst of making the right turn, the van encroached into the rider's path and the motorcycle hit the left side of the van.

Uddin failed to keep a proper lookout and did not give way to Mr Wong who had the right of way.

Uddin's lawyer, Mr Low Woon Ming, said in mitigation that his client, who is the sole breadwinner of his family, has been working in Singapore for about 10 years. His most recent employers have described him as a "helpful and hardworking" worker. .

Counsel said his client would have a much clearer view of the victim and his motorcycle if not for two stationary vehicles which had, to some extent, blocked his view of the road.

Uddin could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
