The nurse was attempting to feed an elderly patient who was tied down in order to stop him getting out of bed by himself and falling. The patient was not cooperating - he was busy trying to untie himself. The nurse gave up trying to feed him.

I later learned that the patient had suffered a stroke and also had dementia, which caused him to be confused and unable to articulate clearly.
