The year 2018 was more about slowly unfolding - and mostly disturbing - issues than big events, some of which could come to a head in 2019 with unpredictable, and likely unpleasant consequences.

The economic news cycle was dominated by trade frictions, which threaten to escalate into a trade war, particularly involving the United States and China.
