There was an audible gasp in the 78,000-seat Maracana Stadium as the athlete propelled himself down a six-storey high ramp and through a hoop.

The Paralympic Games opened on Wednesday evening with samba, parading wheelchairs, giant balloons - and loud booing of Brazil's president.

The 15th Summer Paralympics brings together some 4,300 athletes from over 170 nations, and will see them compete in more than 20 sports including archery, judo and swimming.
