Model Heidi Klum, known for her Halloween parties and spectacular costumes, went the whole nine yards. The model spent 10 hours being made up as sultry cartoon character Jessica Rabbit.

Klum posted a series of videos on Instagram showing prosthetics being applied to her face and body. She was barely recognisable when she turned up at her party.

Singer Katy Perry, dressed as a giant microphone, shared a slow-mo video of a literal mic drop as she flops on a couch, while model-host Tyra Banks wore facial hair to look like tycoon Richard Branson.

US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres, dressed in a tight, revealing top, introduced herself as the youngest Kardashian sister, Karla. She even added herself in a promotional video for the latest season of reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashian.

Fans went wild when singer Taylor Swift performed Let It Go from popular children's movie Frozen, in an Olaf costume with Idina Menzel.

Special mention goes to celebrity couples and families who took the effort to coordinate their costumes.

Transformers star Josh Duhamel and wife Fergie dressed up as designer Karl Lagerfield and his cat Choupette, while Magic Mike actor Channing Tatum went as Dr Suess's Cat In The Hat, with his wife, actress Jenna Dewan Tatum as the sexier version.

Actor Neil Patrick Harris and his family, who have never failed to impress each year, dressed up as their favourite Star Wars characters, and singer Jay Z, wife Beyonce and daughter Blue Ivy pretended to be characters from the 1988 classic Eddie Murphy comedy Coming To America.
