Arts Picks: Reframing Modernism, I Know Why The Rebel Sings, Ballet Under The Stars and more

NATIONAL GALLERY SINGAPORE - REFRAMING MODERNISM

It is the closing stretch of the first major exhibition by National Gallery Singapore. Reframing Modernism showcases South-east Asian artists such as Singapore's Georgette Chen alongside Pablo Picasso and Russia's Wassily Kadinsky. Some 200 paintings are on display in this show developed with France's Centre Pompidou.

I KNOW WHY THE REBEL SINGS

Part of The O.P.E.N, the run-up to the Singapore International Festival of Arts later this year, photojournalist Newsha Tavakolian's exhibition showcases images of war, humanitarian tragedy and women. The display made headlines after the Media Development Authority disallowed 15 of her photos depicting female Kurdish soldiers taking up arms against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

CLUB MALAM

Also part of The O.P.E.N., this weekend event conceived by Noorlinah Mohamed has eight artists from Singapore, Yogyakarta and Germany re-creating Singapore's nightclub scene of the 1940s and 1950s at the Old Kallang Airport. Expect a cutting-edge mix of music, digital media, installation and performance art.

BALLET UNDER THE STARS
