I commend The Straits Times for turning the spotlight on sexual crime ("Rise in sexual crimes over last four years"; Aug 23).

I hope the paper, the authorities or some voluntary welfare organisation will go a step further to awaken parents to this issue.

It is time to raise awareness of sexual abuse. Schools and the community could perhaps organise programmes to spread the word.

All parents should be aware of such crimes, which could happen in their very households.
