Sad but right decision on Olympics broadcast rights issue

The decision by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) not to step in with additional funding to secure "live" broadcast rights to next month's Olympic Games in Rio, though sad, is the right one under the circumstances ("'Bailout' unlikely for Olympics 'live' telecast"; July 24).

The fees asked for to secure "live" broadcast rights have really spiralled out of control.

While the Olympic Games allow us to catch the world's best athletes in action, the assessment by the MCCY that it is "neither prudent nor value-for-money to spend more and more on escalating rights fees" is a wise one.

It is also time for the Singapore public to demonstrate that such escalating fees cannot be condoned any longer.
