India shouldn't overreact to Trudeau's remarks on farmer protests: Statesman

In its editorial, the paper questions External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's decision to skip a meeting of global foreign ministers called by his Canadian counterpart.

NEW DELHI (THE STATESMAN/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - It is difficult not to conclude that the Indian establishment is overreacting to concerns voiced overseas on the right of its farmers to protest laws they deem unfair.

The decision by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to skip a meeting of global foreign ministers called by his Canadian counterpart to craft a unified response to the coronavirus pandemic a month after he had seemed to heartily welcome the initiative, was clearly provoked by remarks of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that India deems ill-informed and unwarranted.
