HANOI • The Communist Party chief of one of Vietnam's largest cities was fired yesterday for violating party rules, the government said, as part of the country's massive anti-corruption sweep targeting political heavyweights and executives.

Da Nang party chief Nguyen Xuan Anh, 41, was sacked for violating party rules and tarnishing the party's reputation, according to its supervision commission.

Da Nang is preparing to host world leaders at a summit next month of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation grouping.
