INDRAMAYU, West Java – Indonesian storyteller Samsudin laid out cardboard animal figures on the floor and waited patiently for the children to choose their favourites.

After picking up an endangered animal – Javan rhinoceros, Sumatran tigers, elephants or orang utans – in each hand, they sat in a row in front of him and pricked up their ears.
