Fighting is threatening to escalate between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army, an ethnic armed group seeking self-determination in Rakhine state. The worsening conflict could complicate the ongoing rehabilitation efforts as the state struggles to recover from the violence that caused some 700,000 refugees to flee two years ago.

The Malaysian King, Sultan Muhammad V, has abdicated in an unprecedented move, ending weeks of speculation about his future that had heightened after a recent meeting of the country's nine sultans. His resignation comes just two years after he ascended to the post in December 2016.
