Thai govt’s bid to sell old rice brings back bad memories linked to Yingluck

Thai commerce minister Phumtham Wechayahai has eaten it. So has premier Srettha Thavisin. In recent days, the Pheu Thai-led Cabinet has revived political ghosts by eating rice that has been stockpiled for ten years under the disastrous rice subsidy scheme implemented by Yingluck Shinawatra’s administration. They claim the rice can be sold. The rice-pledging scheme eventually resulted in a court case over criminal negligence that forced Yingluck to flee overseas, after which she was jailed for five years in absentia.
