Yip Ren Kai's chat group goes quiet. Lim Teck Yin's phone is pinging bad news. It's Thursday and Indonesia have beaten Singapore in the Philippines in water polo. The streak is sunk, the spell is over.

"Shock," says Yip, a three-time SEA Games water polo gold medallist, about what he felt. "I could feel the pain in my bones," says Lim, the chief executive officer of Sport Singapore and a six-time champion.
