SINGAPORE – A 42-year-old man has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a series of employment scams.

In a statement on Feb 7, the police said they received reports from victims of such scams between August 2023 and September 2024.

The victims had responded to online advertisements offering jobs, added the police. After the victims had made payments for administrative fees via bank transfer, the man ceased contact with them.

Officers from Jurong Police Divison managed to establish the man’s identity through follow-up investigations and arrested him on Feb 7.

According to preliminary investigations, he is believed to be involved in at least 23 similar cases of employment scams.

The man is expected to be charged on Feb 8 with cheating, an offence that carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The number of scam cases in 2024 increased by 16.3 per cent, with victims losing a record high of more than $385.6 million in the first six months of 2024.

According to statistics from the police, more than half of scam victims are young adults aged 20 to 39, and job scams are the most common scam type they fall for.
