SINGAPORE - Conmen are now using a new ruse in which they mimic operations that aim to combat scams, such as the police’s Anti-Scam Centre (ASC) and ScamShield.

The latest ruse involves scammers calling victims and posing as officers from ASC or ScamShield, and telling them that their phone numbers have been used for illegal activities linked to investment scams.

In some cases, the scammers would ask the victims to confirm their full name and identification number after stating it accurately, said the police in a Nov 20 statement.

The

ScamShield app

helps to identify and alert users to potential scam threats on messaging platforms, and its website includes advisories on the latest scam trends.

The police will never ask for personal details over the phone or messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, the statement added.

Singaporeans should also remember not to disclose their personal details to unknown persons, the police said.
