SINGAPORE – Singaporeans who get calls from scammers claiming to be government officials should be wary and not transfer any money to them, said the police.

The conmen, often using local numbers, will try to pass themselves off as government officials from the Digital Development and Information Ministry or other government agencies like the Singapore Police Force, Monetary Authority of Singapore or SingCert.

They might tell victims that their Singapore phone number was misused in Malaysian job scam advertisements, and they could also try to transfer the call to a supposed “Malaysia Interpol” official, said the police in a statement on Jan 5.

The conmen could then direct victims to disclose their personal particulars and banking credentials or transfer money into a bank account provided by the conmen.

The police said no government official will ask people to take any of the above actions or make them install non-government mobile apps from unofficial app stores.
