SINGAPORE - A 27-year-old man was on Friday (June 16) morning arrested for public nuisance after leaving two bags unattended at Aljunied MRT Station, police said.
He had intentionally left the two bags, containing clothing and food, at the station and gone to a coffee shop nearby, preliminary investigations found.
The police were alerted to the case at 10.04am and Bedok Police Division officers and the Public Transport Security Command traced and detained the owner of the bags in the same area, with information provided by SMRT staff.
It comes after two men, aged 25 and 27, were arrested on May 26 for leaving three bags unattended at the same MRT station.
The police in their statement said they treat all security threats seriously and will not hesitate to take action against anyone who intentionally causes public alarm.
If convicted of the offence of public nuisance, the man can be fined up to $1,000.
The police reminded the public not to leave personal belongings unattended. Any suspicious items or behaviour should be reported to MRT staff or to the police immediately.
On June 7, a 24-year-old man was arrested after leaving a luggage bag unattended at Admiralty MRT Station.
In April, a 69-year-old man was arrested after leaving flour at Woodleigh MRT Station, sparking a security scare that closed the station for about three hours.
That same month, a 39-year-old man was arrested for leaving a bag unattended at Hougang MRT Station. The station was also briefly shut down as a result.
Police investigations are ongoing.
