Prior to stepping into an ActiveSG gym about a little more than a year ago, the mental image I had was of an old, run-down gym with limited old and battered equipment. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The gym was kempt, with up-to-date equipment interspaced nicely throughout the area.

I have always had this perception that public gyms could not hold a candle to the likes of private ones. However, till this date, I find myself frequently going back. I’ve come to realise that ActiveSG offers more than just a place to work out; it’s the supportive culture and welcoming environment that sets it apart.

When I walk in, I am greeted with the smiles of the friendly sports staff, who go above and beyond to even coach those who are new to the gyms. I find myself talking and sharing a laugh with the regulars that frequent the place, and forging a bond that I never would have anticipated.

I appreciate the fact that ActiveSG integrates all sorts of activities as well, from sports to Zumba to belly dancing, and more. It offers various avenues for everyone to join in the fun. I think ActiveSG is great – it keeps the older generation fit, both mentally and physically, it is made accessible to all, and most importantly, it fosters a sense of community spirit.

For anyone hesitant about trying that Zumba class or unsure about joining a programme, I encourage you to take the leap. You might just find a welcoming and passionate family there.
