SINGAPORE - Trying to get your hands on a bottle of clear Coca-Cola? You can now get it without having to book a ticket to Japan, where the "clear" edition is being sold.

Since Tuesday (June 19), local online grocery concierge Honestbee has been selling the drink for $6.

Called Clear Coke, the lemon-flavoured drink is a colourless and clear version of Coca-Cola. It was launched in Japan on June 11, following the country's latest fad of clear drinks, including clear milk tea and coffee.

To create the drink, the caramel ingredients that give Coca-Cola its distinctive dark brown colour were left out.

It took a year to develop the recipe for Clear Coke, before Coca-Cola's headquarters in the United States approved the drink, according to Business Insider.

It took experiments with more than 50 samples and flavours, before it was decided that the drink would have a lemon flavour, Business Insider reported.

So far, the drink is currently only sold in Japan, with no word yet on whether it will be introduced in other countries.

In response to queries from The Straits Times, Honestbee said it is importing the drink directly from Japan.

According to its website, each customer can buy only up to six 500ml bottles of the soft drink.

This is to ensure that all customers have the opportunity to get their hands on the new products, said a spokesman for Honestbee.

It added that it is currently the only available source for Clear Coke here.

The online grocery store is also selling Asashi Clear Caffe Latte, a transparent version of bottled coffee, at $3.90.

The drink was released in Japan by brewery and soft drink company Asahi in May.

Japan has been swamped by a recent trend in transparent sweet drinks, which are supposedly less sweet and contain fewer calories.

The drinks are especially useful in the Japanese workplace, as they reportedly allow employees to appear more professional.
