JAFFNA (Sri Lanka) – I am sitting in a bumpy public bus in April 2024 in the northernmost province of Sri Lanka, and there is a Tamil song by Indian music star A.R. Rahman from the 1990s blaring over the loudspeakers.
The bus is filled with people carrying backpacks and gunny sacks that perfume the air with a mix of masala and spices. The conductor is humming the song as he stamps tickets.
