SINGAPORE – The recently refreshed 60-seat Heavenly Wang at Thomson Plaza now offers more than just Nanyang coffee, toast and staples such as mee siam and mee rebus. Diners can go for new items on the expanded menu, such as freshly cooked nasi lemak, complete with boneless chicken thighs deep-fried to order.
The kiosk’s kitchen can now fry foods – thanks to the installation of a new kitchen exhaust system during a three-week renovation in October. The new items are exclusive to the Thomson outlet of the halal-certified home-grown chain, which started in 1953 and now has 18 outlets islandwide.

Try Laksa Poached Rice ($6.90), a comforting bowl of rice in laksa gravy – a newfangled version of pao fan. Each bowl is topped with crispy rice, prawns, fish cake, tau pok, a hard-boiled egg and deep-fried wonton skins, and finished with chopped laksa leaves. Though the broth is thin, it has flavour.

The outlet also debuts a new nasi lemak range, prepared with Thai jasmine rice cooked in small batches throughout the day.
The Green Spiced Boneless Chicken Nasi Lemak ($8) features a slab of juicy, lemongrass-fragrant fried boneless chicken thigh. A sunny side-up sits atop a generous portion of rice – aromatic and rich with the flavours of pandan and coconut cream, with a citrusy edge from the bruised lemongrass in the mix. You get a portion of the usual fried peanuts with ikan bilis. The set comes with sweet and slightly spicy sambal tumis, as well as a green chilli dip – saltier from the addition of crispy whitebait.

The Sambal Balado Boneless Chicken Nasi Lemak ($8) offers the same components with a different chilli – a bright red sambal balado. It has a moderate heat level and is less salty and more aromatic with garlic and onion.
Top up the order with $1.50 during lunch (11am to 2pm) or dinner (6 to 9pm) for a drink. Go for the new Kumquat drink, usually priced at $3.50 for a cold regular-sized cup. Each cup comes with a whole preserved kumquat and has a salty, tangy, refreshing taste.

Other new items include the Garlic Butter With Turkey Ham Bunwich ($3.80), a sweet-savoury, pillowy bun, though the turkey ham and cheese make it slightly salty.

For Christmas, there is a Kaya Molten Cream Bun ($2.80) – available till Dec 31 at selected outlets – made with kaya blended with cream for a thick, gooey filling and topped with toasted coconut flakes. It is a tad too sweet for me, but those with a sweet tooth may enjoy it.
