SINGAPORE – Adding to the recent wave of new Korean restaurants opening is Bomul Samgyetang, which launched at Chijmes on Nov 27.
As its name states, the 60-seat restaurant specialises in Korean ginseng chicken soup – exactly the comfort food that I have been craving.
Here, whole organic chicken is stuffed with Korean glutinous rice, jujubes and specially imported whole ginseng aged for four to six years.
It is simmered in a broth with over 18 herbs and ingredients with plenty of purported health benefits – such as deer antler, dried gardenia fruit and mulberry leaf.
There are 10 samgyetang to pick from and prices start at $29 for a portion that comes with refillable banchan.
My picks are the ones that have stronger flavours in the broth – Rejuvenation ($36), which is infused with aged black garlic; aromatic Black Truffle ($38); and Spicy Cure ($32), brewed with chilli pepper, chives and enoki mushrooms.

Other highlights include the equally comforting samgyejuk (Korean chicken and rice porridge, from $22) and super-crisp minari pancake ($22) made with Korean water dropwort.

Add on the signature Honey Ginseng Tea ($9) to go with the dishes and housemade ginseng ice cream ($6 a scoop) infused with Korean red ginseng powder to finish.
A selection of samgyetang and samgyejuk (pick any two) are available on its $75++ set menu for two, which includes a choice of side and tea.
Look out for the oppa eye candy too – a Singapore-based South Korean founder and his best friend, who is also a bodybuilder, run the business.
