British celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay has revealed he underwent surgery for skin cancer.

In an Instagram post on Aug 30, the 58-year-old restaurateur and television personality thanked the medical team who removed the basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, for its “fast reactive work”.

The post featured two photos: one showing his side profile with a bandage below his left ear, and the other a close-up of the post-surgery scar.

“Please don’t forget your sunscreen this weekend,” he reminded his 19 million followers in the same caption and joked that the surgery was not for “a face lift”.

The news comes a few days after the announcement of the 24th season of his popular American reality cooking series Hell’s Kitchen (2005 to present), which he hosts.

It is an adaptation of his original British version of the same name, which aired from 2004 to 2009.

He is also a judge on American reality cooking series MasterChef (2010 to present) and is starring in American reality series Kitchen Nightmares (2007 to present).

The cancer reveal came more than a month after the father of six children aged two to 27 announced on Instagram that he had successfully completed an Ironman triathlon.

In 2024, he posted on Instagram that he had “a really bad accident” while cycling that left him with a large bruise on his torso.

Ramsay founded restaurant group Gordon Ramsay Restaurants in 1997, and has owned and operated many eateries around the world. These include Singapore’s Bread Street Kitchen in Marina Bay Sands, which opened in 2015.

Other prominent figures who had treatment for basal cell carcinoma in recent years include former US president Joe Biden in 2023. That year, Australian actor Hugh Jackman revealed he underwent two biopsies and his doctor had spotted what could have been basal cell carcinoma.

In March 2024, the late American celebrity fitness instructor and television personality Richard Simmons revealed he was diagnosed with the same condition. He died in July that year at the age of 76 after a fall.
