The National Health Survey 2010 found that 54 per cent of Singaporeans aged 18 to 69 do not participate in sports or exercise, a rise from 48 per cent in 2004.
The main reason cited was a lack of leisure time.
Making available physical fitness facilities in housing estates may help, provided residents make use of them.
More hard courts and table-tennis tables can be made available as well, especially in HDB void decks. Unlike fitness facilities, these promote games that are fun and interactive.
I hope that with all these facilities, the next National Health Survey will show a drop in the percentage of residents who are physically inactive.
