Thousands march against Trump’s troop deployment in Washington

Several thousand Washington DC residents on Sept 6 marched to demand US President Donald Trump end the deployment of National Guard troops patrolling the capital city’s streets.

Protesters at the “We Are All DC” march, who included undocumented immigrants and supporters of Palestine, chanted slogans denouncing Mr Trump and carried posters, some which read “Trump must go now,” “Free DC” and “Resist Tyranny.”

“I’m here to protest the occupation of (Washington) DC,” said Mr Alex Laufer. “We’re opposing the authoritarian regime, and we need to get the federal police and the National Guard off our streets.”

Claiming that crime was blighting the city, Mr Trump in August deployed the troops to “re-establish law, order, and public safety.” Mr Trump also placed the capital district’s Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control and sent federal law enforcement personnel, including members of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement to police the city’s streets.

China criticises Australia, Canada warships in Taiwan Strait

China said on Sept 6 that its military monitored the passage of Australian and Canadian warships through the Taiwan Strait, criticising their presence in the sensitive waterway as “causing trouble”.

Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory and claims jurisdiction over the body of water that separates the self-ruled island from the Chinese mainland.

“On September 6, the Canadian frigate ‘Quebec’ and the Australian destroyer ‘Brisbane’ transited the Taiwan Strait, causing trouble and provoking,” said Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the Eastern Theatre Command of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

Farage converts lament lack of Reform UK policy breakthrough at party conference

Nigel Farage gathered Reform UK’s best-known figures on stage to close his party’s biggest annual conference to date with a rendition of Britain’s national anthem, as he sought to show he’s building a team ready for power.

Using his final speech in a conference entitled “The Next Step” to call for “discipline” among members, Mr Farage urged supporters to keep their disagreements behind closed doors and present a united front as the party pushes to secure a majority in a general election due by 2029 – but that he predicts could come as early as 2027.

Speakers throughout the two-day Union flag-studded conference sought to give a sense of the building momentum behind Reform as the membership numbers rose past 240,000, then 241,000, then 242,000. “A quarter of a million, here we come,” Mr Farage crowed triumphantly. But behind the bombast, there were plenty of signs that he still has some way to go to professionalise his poll-leading party.

Poignant Portugal cruise, England unbeaten in World Cup qualifying

Cristiano Ronaldo helped an emotional Portugal enjoy a perfect start to their World Cup qualifying campaign as Thomas Tuchel’s uninspiring England remained unbeaten on Sept 6.

Portugal, playing for the first time since the death of their Liverpool forward Diogo Jota along with his brother Andre Silva in a car accident, took an impressive first step to the finals in 2025 sweeping aside Armenia 5-0 in Yerevan.

Both teams observed one minute’s silence before kick-off at the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium in tribute to Jota and his brother who were killed in a crash in northern Spain on July 3, 11 days after Jota had married Rute Cardoso, the mother of his three children.
