Zelensky tells UN Russia must be forced into peace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the United Nations Security Council on Sept 24 that the war between Russia and Ukraine cannot be calmed by talks alone, but that Russia must be forced into peace.
Mr Zelensky has sought the support of Western leaders for what he calls a “victory plan” to end the war that began when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of his country in February 2022.
Mr Zelensky said the war would end one day but not because “someone got tired of the war” or through a trade with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a reference to proposals that Ukraine cede some territory seized by Russia to settle the conflict.
“This war can’t be calmed by talks. Action is needed,” Mr Zelensky said, thanking nations who have provided Ukraine support.

Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris leads Republican Donald Trump 47 per cent to 40 per cent in the race to win the Nov 5 US presidential election, as she appeared to blunt Trump’s edge on the economy and jobs, a Reuters/Ipsos poll published on Sept 24 found.
Mr Harris had a lead of six percentage points based on unrounded figures - which showed her with support from 46.61 per cent of registered voters while Trump was backed by 40.48 per cent, according to the three-day poll that closed on Sept 23.
The Democrat’s lead was slightly higher than her five-point advantage over Trump in a Sept 11-12 Reuters/Ipsos poll.
‘I thought it was AI,’ says Wimbledon AFC director

AFC Wimbledon’s managing director thought he was looking at AI-created images when he saw pictures of flooding at their Plough Lane home that led to more than 100,000 litres of water being pumped out of the stadium.
Heavy flooding in South London left Wimbledon’s stadium under water and its pitch suffered significant damage, James Woodroof told the BBC, causing their League Cup match against Newcastle United on Sept 24 to be moved to St James’ Park and rescheduled for Oct 1.
Their League Two match against Crewe Alexandra scheduled for Oct 1 was also postponed, while club staff repair damage caused to the stadium after the nearby River Wandle broke its banks on the night of Sept 22.
