China worries drive US stocks down nearly 3 per cent, fuel sharp selloffs in Europe

US stocks lost another nearly three per cent Tuesday as new data offered more evidence that China's industrial machine is stalling.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished down 469.68 points (2.84 per cent) at 16,058.35.

Wall Street followed sharp selloffs in Asia and Europe, after China's official purchasing managers' index fell to its lowest level in three years in August, suggesting the manufacturing sector was contracting.

US to seek demand growth, press China for clarity at G20

The US will press fellow G20 economies this week to act to boost world growth, and urge China to better communicate its policies, a senior Treasury official said Tuesday.

The official said Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew's focus will be on measures countries can undertake to stimulate demand when the economic chiefs of the Group of 20 elite economies meet on Thursday and Friday in Ankara, Turkey.

"He will emphasize that, fundamentally, the world needs more demand," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Most Americans' hearts are older than their actual years

Three out of four Americans' hearts are older than their chronological age, raising the risk of heart disease, stroke and premature death, officials said Tuesday.

An online tool at www.cdc.gov/heartdisease/heartage.htm can help people determine how old their heart is, based on factors like weight, smoking, diabetes and high blood pressure, said the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

For most adults aged 30-74, their predicted heart age is "significantly higher than their chronological age", said the CDC in its Vital Signs report, released Tuesday.

Football: Manchester United confirms Anthony Martial signing, shocking European football

Manchester United on Tuesday confirmed the signing of 19-year-old French striker Anthony Martial from Monaco on a four-year contract with an option for a further year.

"Manchester United is delighted to announce that Anthony Martial has completed his transfer from AS Monaco," the club announced on their website.

United did not disclose the transfer fee, but British media reports said it was £36 million (S$78.1 million) - a record for a teenage player - with reports in France suggesting it could rise to 80 million euros (S$127.41 million).

Five-time champion Roger Federer breezed through sweltering conditions at the US Open on Tuesday but the crushing heat and humidity took the number of first-round retirements to a record nine.

Second-seeded Federer had little trouble in seeing off Argentina's world number 34 Leonardo Mayer 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in just 77 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The 34-year-old Swiss, bidding to become the oldest champion in New York in 45 years, fired 12 aces, 29 winners and broke serve six times.
