FBI investigating attempted assassination of Trump in Florida

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was safe after what the FBI said appeared to be an assassination attempt on Sept 15 outside Trump’s golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Law enforcement officials said during an afternoon press conference that the gunman was in some bushes near the property line of the golf course when Secret Service agents, who were clearing holes ahead of Trump, spotted a rifle barrel in the bushes.

Agents engaged the gunman and fired at least four rounds of ammunition around 1.30pm (1.30am Singapore time). The gunman then dropped his rifle, two backpacks and other items and fled in a black Nissan car. A witness, the sheriff said, saw the gunman and managed to take photos of his car and licence plate.

Authorities then sent out an alert to statewide agencies with the information on the vehicle, which led to sheriff’s deputies in neighbouring Martin County stopping and apprehending the suspect on I-95.

Russia has been gaining ground in parts of eastern Ukraine including around Pokrovsk. Capture of the transport hub could enable Moscow to open new lines of attack.

Zelensky said the situation in the east was “very tough”, adding that half of Ukraine’s brigades there were not equipped.

Newcastle’s long-range double stuns Wolves in 2-1 comeback victory

Newcastle United fought back from a halftime deficit with two long-range strikes in the space of five minutes to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux on Sunday and move into third place in the Premier League.

Fabian Schar’s speculative effort took a deflection to draw Newcastle level after Wolves captain Mario Lemina’s 36th-minute goal had put the hosts ahead at the break as they chased a first league success of the season.

But while there might have been an element of fortune about Schar’s 75th-minute goal, there was no luck involved as Harvey Barnes thrashed home a spectacular winner five minutes later.

“This is a dream of mine and so happy that I was able to do that,” Vu said after dropping her approach inches from the hole to set up her winning putt. “It meant the world.”
