‘Loving and being loved’: UK’s Princess Kate says she is grateful after finishing chemotherapy

Kate, Britain’s Princess of Wales, said on Sept 9 she had finished her course of preventative chemotherapy for cancer, saying the treatment had given her a new perspective and made her grateful for “simply loving and being loved”.

Air Canada prepares to shut down as talks with pilots union near deadlock

Air Canada is finalising plans to suspend most of its operations, likely beginning on Sept 8, as talks with the pilot union are nearing an impasse over “inflexible” wage demands, the country’s largest airline said on Sept 9.

Air Canada and its low-cost subsidiary, Air Canada Rouge, operate nearly 670 flights daily. Unless they reach a settlement with the union, the shutdown could affect 110,000 passengers daily, causing widespread disruptions.

The airline’s pilots have been pushing to close the salary gap with their US peers, who managed to strike lucrative labour deals in 2023 amid pilot shortages and strong travel demand.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said he supports a ballot initiative in Florida that would legalise recreational use of marijuana for adults ages 21 years and older.

The statement, made on social media platform Truth Social late on Sept 8, comes after a separate comment in late August in which he implied he was open to legalising recreational marijuana use in the state.

Trump’s support of the ballot initiative, known as Amendment 3, comes even as some fellow Republicans, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, have come out against the measure. The former president’s administration generally opposed measures to open up access to cannabis.

France back to winning ways as they dominate Belgium

REUTERS

France overcame a slow start to beat neighbours Belgium 2-0 on Sept 9 as Randal Kolo Muani’s close-in strike and Ousmane Dembele’s left footed drive handed them their first points of the Nations League campaign.

It was a positive response by the French, who changed eight of the starting players, including Kylian Mbappe, after being beaten 3-1 by Italy in Paris last Friday in their opening Group A2 fixture.

But they had to weather early attacks by their visitors before settling into a rhythm and then imposing themselves on the contest.
