Hamas praises ‘glorious’ Oct 7 attack ahead of anniversary
Palestinian militant group Hamas on Oct 6 praised its Oct 7 attack on Israel in a video message ahead of the first anniversary of the deadly storming of southern Israel which sparked the war in Gaza.
“The crossing of the glorious 7th of October shattered the illusions the enemy had created for itself, convincing the world and the region of its supposed superiority and capabilities,” Qatar-based Hamas member Khalil al-Hayya said in a video statement.
Last year’s Oct 7 attack resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures that include hostages killed in captivity.
Harris says US will not stop ‘pressure’ on Israel for ceasefire
The United States will not ease its “pressure” on Israel and Arab leaders to reach a deal on hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza, Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview released Oct 6.
Washington is working with Israel on humanitarian aid and “the need for a deal to be done which would release the hostages and create a ceasefire. And we’re not going to stop in terms of putting that pressure on Israel and in the region, including Arab leaders,” Harris told CBS’ 60 Minutes.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is “not listening,” CBS’ Bill Whitaker suggested to Harris in an excerpt from the interview, which is due to air in full on Oct 7.
UN refugee chief says airstrikes in Lebanon have violated humanitarian law
The United Nations’ refugee chief Filippo Grandi said on Oct 6 that airstrikes in Lebanon had violated international humanitarian law by hitting civilian infrastructure and killing civilians, in reference to Israel’s bombardment of the country.
“Unfortunately, many instances of violations of international humanitarian law in the way the airstrikes are conducted that have destroyed or damaged civilian infrastructure, have killed civilians, have impacted humanitarian operations,” he told media in Beirut.
Grandi was in Lebanon as it struggles to cope with the displacement of more than 1.2 million people as a result of an expanded Israeli air and ground operation that it says is targeting Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Saudi King Salman to undergo medical tests for lung inflammation
Saudi King Salman will undergo medical tests on Oct 6 evening for lung inflammation, the state news agency said, citing a statement from the royal court.
The brief statement did not reveal more details.
The 88-year-old king of the world’s biggest oil exporter, a major US ally in the Middle East, also received medical care for lung inflammation in May.
