Dozens dead despite Trump call to halt Gaza bombing
Dozens were killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza on Oct 4, local health officials said, despite a demand from US President Donald Trump for Israel to stop bombing in response to a declaration by Hamas that it was ready to free hostages under his plan to end the two-year-old war.
At least 36 people were killed in bombardments and airstrikes in the devastated Palestinian enclave since Mr Trump demanded Israel halt its attacks late on Oct 3.
Eighteen people died in sporadic incidents, while 18 people, including children, were killed and several others wounded in an Israeli strike on a house in the Tuffah neighbourhood in Gaza City, medics said. The attack damaged several buildings nearby.
Israel said it had targeted a Hamas militant who had posed a threat to its troops in the area, and that reports of casualties were under review.

US Border Patrol personnel shot an armed woman in Chicago on Oct 4, the Department of Homeland Security said, as scores of protesters faced off against federal immigration agents on the city’s south-west side.
No law enforcement officers were seriously injured in the incident, in which a group that included the woman rammed cars into vehicles used by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said in a statement.
The woman, a US citizen who was not identified, drove herself to the hospital, according to the statement. No additional information was immediately available about the woman’s condition.
Populist Babis cruises to Czech election win

Billionaire Andrej Babis’ ANO party cruised to victory in the Czech Republic’s parliamentary election on Oct 4, raising the prospect of a government that would boost Europe’s populist, anti-immigration camp and reduce support for Ukraine.
An ebullient Babis told supporters that ANO would seek a one-party Cabinet but would talk with two small parties - including the far-right SPD - for support as his party will lack an outright majority.
He again rejected accusations that his win would make the central European nation a less reliable European Union and Nato partner.

The tomb of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, one of the largest in southern Egypt’s Valley of the Kings and Queens, was officially opened to the public on Oct 4 after years of restoration.
Egypt’s tourism and antiquities minister, Mr Sherif Fathy, unveiled to reporters the newly refurbished site, which dates back more than 3,000 years.
Dr Mohamed Ismail Khaled, head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, said restoration involved more than two decades of “incredibly delicate work because the tomb was suffering severe deterioration”.
Mercedes’ George Russell clinches surprise pole

The Marina Bay Street Circuit does not hold the fondest memories for Mercedes’ George Russell. It was here at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, where a mistake on the final lap saw the Briton, who was third at the time, clip the wall and crash into the barriers.
After the second practice session on Oct 3, it was shaping up to be another Formula One weekend to forget for Russell, when he crashed into the wall at Turn 16, leading to the weekend’s first red flag.
The crash caused a tyre puncture and damaged the front wing of his car, ruling the 27-year-old out of the rest of the session.
