Trump’s election fraud claims raise alarms of 2020 repeat

Donald Trump has seized on isolated irregularities caught by US election officials to claim “cheating” has occurred, amplifying expectations that he will again reject results if he loses next week’s vote.

The Republican candidate has consistently declined to commit to accepting the result of the November 5 election, setting the stage for a repeat performance around the unfounded claim that his 2020 loss to Joe Biden was rigged.

On Oct 30, Trump denounced what he said was “cheating” at “large-scale levels never seen before” in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania.

I’ll be backing Harris: Schwarzenegger endorses Democratic ticket

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the “Terminator” star and former Republican governor of California, endorsed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on Oct 30 as the only way to “turn the page” on Donald Trump’s divisiveness.

The former bodybuilder, 77, said that while he had issues with both major parties, Trump’s rhetoric calling the United States “a trash can for the world” had made him “furious.”

With just days until the Nov 5 election, Schwarzenegger becomes the latest of dozens of prominent former Republican officials – including former vice president Dick Cheney – to endorse the Democratic candidate for president over Trump.

Dangerous chemicals found in hundreds of cosmetic products: EU agency

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) said Oct 30 that it had found hazardous and banned chemicals in hundreds of cosmetic products sold across Europe.

The Helsinki-based agency has inspected almost 4,500 cosmetic products in 13 European countries and found that six percent of the products – or 285 products – contained substances banned due to their detrimental effects on health.

The chemicals were found in products “from various sellers and at all price ranges” during controls between November 2023 and April 2024, the agency said in a statement.

Vatican tribunal defends conviction of senior cardinal for misappropriation of funds

A Vatican tribunal on Oct 30 defended its 2023 decision to convict a senior Catholic cardinal of misappropriation of funds, saying the prelate was “aware of all the steps” in a botched US$200 million (S$264 million) London real estate deal.

Cardinal Angelo Becciu, the most senior Church official ever to stand trial before a Vatican criminal court, was convicted last December on several charges and sentenced to five-and-a-half years in jail. He denies wrongdoing and remains free pending an appeal.

In a new 800-page filing to further explain the guilty verdict, the Vatican tribunal said Becciu inappropriately used Vatican funds and acted with “direct and personal intervention” to pursue the investment of a building at 60 Sloane Avenue, in an upmarket district of London.

Medvedev loses to Australian Popyrin at Paris Masters

AFP

Daniil Medvedev is still searching for his first ATP tournament victory this year after the world number five lost to Australia’s Alexei Popyrin for the first time in his career at the Paris Masters on Oct 30.

Medvedev won the Paris title in 2020 but has not found the indoor tournament to his liking in recent years – the defeat to Popyrin is the third successive time he has gone out in his opening round.

Popyrin, who has been in a rich vein of form this year winning his first Masters tournament in Montreal in August and beating Novak Djokovic in the US Open, edged Medvedev 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a gripping second round match.
