China to carry out live firing operation in Taiwan Strait
Chinese authorities said they would carry out a live firing exercise in the Taiwan Strait on Oct 22, days after US and Canadian warships passed through the area and following recent military drills by Beijing.
The Maritime Safety Administration (MSA) in the southeastern city of Pingtan announced on Oct 21 that “gun firing” would take place in a limited area close to the Chinese mainland coast and about 105 kilometres (66 miles) from self-ruled Taiwan.
China’s Communist Party has never ruled the island, but it claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has said it will not renounce the use of force to bring it under its control.
Putin to discuss Ukraine with UN chief in Russia on Oct 24: Kremlin
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin will meet UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Oct 24 to discuss the Ukraine conflict, in the UN chief’s first trip to Russia in more than two years, the Kremlin said.
The meeting will take place on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in the central Russian city of Kazan, a forum Moscow hopes to use to show the West that attempts to isolate Russia over the Ukraine offensive have failed.
“It is expected that along with the activities of the UN, they will touch upon topical issues on the international agenda, including the Middle East crisis and the situation around Ukraine,” the Kremlin said.
Trump sued over comments about notorious New York case
The “Central Park Five,” five men who were falsely convicted of rape in a notorious 1989 New York case, launched a defamation lawsuit on Oct 21 against former US president Donald Trump.
The lawsuit, filed in a federal court in Pennsylvania, accuses the Republican White House candidate of making “false and defamatory” comments during the Sept 10 presidential debate with Vice President Kamala Harris in Philadelphia.
The five Black and Hispanic men – Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown and Korey Wise – were teenagers when they were convicted of the rape and assault of a female jogger in Central Park.
Brazil’s Lula ‘well’ after head injury, minister says
Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was doing “super well” on Oct 21 after he suffered a head injury at home over the weekend that caused a minor brain hemorrhage, Institutional Relations Minister Alexandre Padilha told reporters.
The remarks came as Lula shared on social media a picture of himself smiling next to Padilha and his top foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim, during a meeting on Oct 21 to “discuss the national and international agenda for the coming days.”
The post did not provide details about Lula’s health.
