Fear engulfs Beirut residents after Israel expands deadly strikes into city centre
Residents of the central Beirut area hit by a deadly Israeli airstrike were still in shock on Oct 11 amid the dust, rubble and broken glass, fearing that if their previously untargeted neighbourhood had been struck, nowhere in Lebanon was safe.
Israel’s stepped-up campaign in Lebanon has heavily targeted the majority Shi’ite Muslim areas of the south, the southern suburbs of Beirut and the Bekaa Valley in the east where its foe Hezbollah has strongholds.
However, two strikes late on Thursday hit al-Basta al-Fouqa, a mixed Beirut district of apartment blocks that had filled over the past two weeks with people fleeing their homes in areas pounded by Israeli strikes.
Thousands said trapped in Jabalia camp as Israel escalates attacks in northern Gaza

Thousands of people are trapped in Gaza’s Jabalia camp as Israeli forces attack the area, Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) said on Oct 11, a week after Israel launched an offensive there which it says is aimed at stopping Hamas regrouping.
Palestinian officials said Israeli military strikes killed at least 34 Palestinians across the Gaza Strip on Oct 11, with nearly half of the fatalities occurring in Jabalia, the northern district which is the largest of Gaza’s historic refugee camps.
The Israeli military says it has killed dozens of militants in Jabalia, though it remains unclear how many of the dead were civilians versus fighters.
Trump asks for military aircraft protection amid Iran threat, reports say
NYT
Donald Trump’s campaign has requested the use of military aircraft and vehicles to protect the former president as he campaigns during the final weeks of the presidential campaign, the New York Times and Washington Post reported on Oct 11.
The request follows two recent assassination attempts against the Republican presidential candidate. It also comes after Trump’s campaign last month said he had been briefed by US intelligence officials on alleged threats from Iran to assassinate him.
A representative for the US Secret Service, which is charged with protecting presidential candidates, said “the former president is receiving the highest levels of protection” but confirmed the Trump campaign had requested more.
Internal TikTok documents show prioritisation of traffic over well-being

TikTok teams identified harmful effects of its platform on young users but limited preventive measures so as to avoid a drop in traffic, according to internal documents revealed Oct 11 by a US public radio station.
The documents, mentioned in a subpoena issued by the Kentucky attorney general, are part of a lawsuit filed by 13 states and Washington D.C., accusing TikTok of harming young users’ mental health.
The papers reveal TikTok’s awareness of its platform’s appeal and its recommendation algorithm, which offers a seemingly endless chain of short videos.

The 51-year-old English designer will however retain his role as creative director for menswear at Dior, Fendi’s stablemate under French luxury giant LVMH.
“Kim Jones and Fendi jointly announce today that Mr. Jones is stepping down from his role as Artistic Director of womenswear and couture at Fendi,” the Roman label said in a press release.
