Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert Kennedy, dies at 96

Ethel Kennedy, a long-time human rights advocate who endured a series of tragedies that included the assassination of her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, and the untimely deaths of two of their 11 children, died on Oct 10 at the age of 96, her grandson Joseph Kennedy III said in a social media post.

“It is with our hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She died this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week,” Kennedy said in a post on X.

Kennedy, who was a devout Catholic, sought to carry on her husband’s works with the founding of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights centre.

UK’s William and Kate in first joint public engagement since cancer treatment

Catherine, Princess of Wales and Prince William on Oct 10 made their first joint public engagement since she ended a course of chemotherapy for cancer, Kensington Palace announced.

The couple visited Southport in northwest England, “to show support to the community and hear how local people have come together as the town recovers” from a July knife attack that killed three children, the palace said.

The princess, better also known as Kate, and William met members of the emergency services who attended after the stabbing spree at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, which also left eight children and two adults wounded.

Zelensky denies ceasefire with Russia under discussion on trip

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Oct 10 a ceasefire with Russia was not under discussion with European allies and urged more Western support ahead of a tough winter during his lightning tour of four capitals.

Zelensky was seeking a military and financial boost during a 48-hour trip to London, Paris, Rome and Berlin, amid fears of dwindling support if Donald Trump becomes US president next month.

Speaking to reporters after talks with President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, Zelensky denied media reports that he was discussing the terms of a ceasefire with Russia.

Former US president Barack Obama will lend some star power to Kamala Harris’s campaign in the must-win swing state of Pennsylvania Oct 10 as Democrats struggle to move the dial against Donald Trump.

America’s first Black president will lead a rally in the steel city of Pittsburgh, his first stop on a monthlong tour of battleground states, to urge people to cast early votes for November’s nail-biting election.

Harris will head to yet more swing states, Nevada and Arizona, to reach out to Latino voters, but the White House said the vice president had also taken part in a virtual briefing on Hurricane Milton, which crashed into Florida overnight.

Djokovic tells Nadal: ‘Your legacy will live forever’

Novak Djokovic told old rival Rafael Nadal that his “legacy will live forever” after the Spanish great announced his retirement from tennis on Oct 10.

“Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit is going to be taught for decades. Your legacy will live forever,” 24-time Grand Slam title winner and fellow former world number one Djokovic wrote on Instagram.

Djokovic and Nadal clashed 60 times in their careers with the Serb edging their rivalry 31-29.
