Biden to lobby Trump administration not to walk away from Ukraine
US President Joe Biden will discuss top domestic and foreign policy priorities with President-elect Donald Trump when the two meet on Nov 13, and lobby the incoming administration not to abandon Ukraine, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on Nov 10.
Republican Trump will take office on Jan 20 after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the Nov 5 presidential election. Biden invited Trump to come to the Oval Office on Nov 13, the White House said.
In an interview on CBS News’ Face the Nation show, Sullivan said Biden’s top message will be his commitment to ensure a peaceful transfer of power, and he will also talk to Trump about what’s happening in Europe, in Asia and the Middle East.
Dutch police seize scores at pro-Palestinian rally after football unrest
Dutch police took away more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters on Nov 11 who defied a ban on demonstrations in Amsterdam following clashes this week involving Israeli football fans.
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the capital’s Dam Square, chanting “Free Palestine” and “Amsterdam says no to genocide”, in reference to the Gaza war.
Israel denies allegations of genocide in its more than year-long offensive against Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Hainan Airlines Boeing 787 turns back to Rome after engine fire
The right engine of a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by Chinese carrier Hainan Airlines caught fire shortly after takeoff from Rome’s Fiumicino airport on Nov 10, an Italian airport official and the Coast Guard said.
The plane, bound for the Chinese city of Shenzhen with 249 passengers and 16 crew members, turned back and landed safely after dumping fuel over the sea.
The aircraft was apparently struck by a bird, the Italian Coast Guard said in a statement. Bird strikes are common and can be a significant threat to aircraft safety.
Gunmen kill 10 in bar shooting in Mexico’s Queretaro state
Gunmen killed 10 people in a bar in the central Mexican state of Queretaro late Nov 9, authorities said, adding to a wave of violent crime that is gripping several areas of the country.
The incident took place in a bar in the downtown area of the state’s capital, also known as Queretaro, where four gunmen entered, killing seven men and three women, according to the state attorney general and Queretaro city’s security chief.
Seven other people were injured. One person was so far in police custody, authorities said. Investigators were at the scene and also looking into a vehicle believed to be linked to the incident.
Neto rescues Chelsea draw as Arsenal title bid suffers fresh blow
Pedro Neto dealt a fresh blow to spluttering Arsenal’s Premier League title challenge as the Chelsea winger’s superb strike rescued a 1-1 draw in the London derby on Nov 10.
Mikel Arteta’s side had taken the lead through Gabriel Martinelli’s second-half goal at Stamford Bridge.
But Neto’s equaliser 10 minutes later earned Chelsea a deserved point and left the Gunners without a win in their last four league games.
