BBC boss and head of news quit after Trump documentary edit criticism

The BBC’s boss and its head of news quit on Nov 9 following criticism over bias at the British broadcaster, including in the way it edited a speech by US President Donald Trump.

The BBC had been under mounting pressure after an internal report by a former standards adviser was leaked to the Daily Telegraph newspaper which cited failings in its coverage of the Israel-Hamas war, trans issues and a speech made by Mr Trump.

The White House had recently denounced the broadcaster as a “propaganda machine” after its flagship Panorama documentary programme was found to have edited two parts of Mr Trump’s speech together so he appeared to encourage the Capitol Hill riots of January 2021.

Mr Tim Davie, who has led the British Broadcasting Corporation since 2020, said he had taken the decision to step down after “reflecting on the very intense personal and professional demands of managing this role over many years in these febrile times”.

World Bank backs US-drafted UN resolution on Gaza

The World Bank backs language in a US-drafted United Nations Security Council resolution on Gaza that would authorise a two-year mandate for a transitional governance body, according to a letter to the US seen by Reuters.

The 15-member UN Security Council began negotiations on Nov 6 on the text that would mandate a so-called Board of Peace transitional governance administration, giving it the authority to establish operational entities to address issues including the reconstruction of Gaza and of economic recovery programs.

The World Bank, the UN and the European Union had estimated in February it would cost more than US$50 billion (S$65 billion) to rebuild Gaza, and are finalising a new interim estimate of US$70 billion.

USDA tells states to reverse efforts to issue full food aid benefits

PHOTO: MARCO POSTIGO STOREL/NYTIMES

The US Department of Agriculture directed states to roll back any steps taken to issue full food aid benefits to low-income Americans or risk financial penalties.

The new guidance issued late on Nov 8 follows the US Supreme Court order on Nov 7 that allowed the Trump administration to continue withholding US$4 billion (S$5.2 billion) to fully fund the aid for nearly 42 million recipients, pending a lower court ruling.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programme (Snap) benefits, also known as food stamps, lapsed at the start of the month for the first time in the programme’s 60-year history due to the federal government shutdown, which is now in its 40th day.

Mexico’s top diplomat leaves Peru amid asylum row

Mexico's top diplomat in Peru has left the country, the South American country said, amid heightened tensions between the two nations over asylum for a former Peruvian prime minister.

"On this date, and as stipulated by the Government of Peru, the charge d'affaires of the United Mexican States carried out her exit immigration control and left the country," Peru's migration agency said in a post on X late on Nov 8.

The departure of Mexican charge d'affaires Karla Ornelas comes after Peru severed diplomatic ties with Mexico for granting asylum to Betssy Chavez, the last prime minister for Peru's ousted and now jailed former President Pedro Castillo.

Man City crush Liverpool to mark Guardiola’s 1,000th match

Manchester City crushed rivals Liverpool 3-0 in a high-stakes Premier League clash on Nov 9, with Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku scoring to seal a win that could prove pivotal in the title race.

The game was City boss Pep Guardiola's 1,000th as a manager and his team marked the milestone with a statement victory that saw them climb to second in the table on 22 points after 11 games, four adrift of leaders Arsenal. Holders Liverpool tumbled to eighth on 18 points.

City were sharp from the outset and Haaland rose high over Ibrahima Konate to head home Matheus Nunes' whipped cross in the 29th minute for his 99th league goal for the club. The goal made amends for the Norwegian missing a penalty early in the game, and Haaland karate-kicked the corner flag in celebration.
