Russian missiles kill five, wound 41 in Ukraine’s Pokrovsk

A Russian double-tap missile attack killed at least five people and wounded 41 others, including four children, in the eastern Ukrainian town of Pokrovsk on June 24, regional officials said.

“This is one of the largest enemy attacks on civilians recently,” regional governor Vadym Filashkin said on Telegram.

Girls aged 9, 11, and 13, and a 12-year-old boy were injured, he added.

UNRWA is sued by Israeli victims of Oct 7 Hamas attack

The United Nations Palestinian refugee agency was sued on June 24 by dozens of Israelis who accused it of aiding and abetting the Oct 7 Hamas attack on Israel.

In a complaint filed with the US District Court in Manhattan, the plaintiffs said the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) spent more than a decade helping Hamas build what they called the “terror infrastructure” and personnel needed for the attack.

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages for what they allege was UNRWA’s “aiding and abetting Hamas’ genocide, crimes against humanity, and torture,” which they said violated international law and the federal Torture Victim Protection Act.

Unesco wants to add Stonehenge to list of endangered heritage sites

The UN’s cultural organisation said June 24 it recommended adding Stonehenge, the renowned prehistoric site in England, to its world heritage in danger list, in what would be seen as an embarrassment for London.

The site has been in the UN organisation’s sights because of British government plans to construct a controversial road tunnel near the world heritage site in southwestern England.

In a written decision seen by AFP, the World Heritage Committee recommended that Stonehenge be added to the UN body’s heritage in danger list “with a view to mobilising international support”.

Bayer Leverkusen to face Arsenal in pre-season London friendly

Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen will face Premier League runners-up Arsenal in a pre-season friendly in London on Aug 7, the German club announced June 24.

The match will be a reunion for several players, along with a meeting between childhood friends and teammates Xabi Alonso and Mikel Arteta, who coach Leverkusen and Arsenal respectively.

Midfielder Granit Xhaka joined Leverkusen before last season after seven years at Arsenal, winning the league and German Cup double.

Pirates of the Caribbean actor killed in Hawaii shark attack

A Hawaiian surfer who also acted on TV and in movies including Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean has died in a shark attack, authorities said.

Tamayo Perry, 49, died on June 23 at Malaekahana Beach on Oahu, moments after the encounter.

Perry played a buccaneer in the fourth installment of the popular swashbuckling franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
